COMMERCE - Profile
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Brief History of the Department:
The year 1974 signifies a land mark in the annals of S.V.K.P & Dr K.S Raju Arts & Science College, Penugonda, a year that saw the dawn of a Department of Commerce as sequel to a long felt need for growth in business and industry. Time has marched on and so has the department, through sunshine, cloud and rain. Turning the clock back to her pre-natal phases, we observe that the decision to create a department for imparting formal education in Commerce was by no means a stray outcome of history.
Looking at the future we are led to ask ourselves:
What role should the department assume to help the nation along the road to "sustainability"? Clearly, with the burgeoning complexities in the world of business, achieving a fit with societal expectations is no mean task. Increasingly better quality education and research opportunities that conduce to India's developmental objectives will have to be offered so as to ensure greater value-edition by the department.
The Department of commerce established in 1974, is one of the oldest departments from the inception of the college and has started B.com first and Second years simultaneously. Since then the department has earned name for itself in Andhra University Area and in the State. The faculty of the department has distinguished themselves in several ways senior faculty members selected through selection committee constituted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The faculty members are competent, qualified and experienced teachers who are engaged in consultancy work and extension services. The department actively participates in the Academic Exchange Programmes and Organizes a Bridge Course in commerce to uphold the students from Non-Commerce Group students. Department has prepared and published teaching, learning material for the B.Com. students. Over the years the course has evolved itself and undergone changes with the changing environment. The nomenclature of the department is also appropriately changed.
The teaching techniques used by the faculty are modern. It includes, besides class room instruction, methods like case study, role playing, group discussion, individual presentation, Audio-Video electronic presentation. Extension field work training to give Practical exposure to live situations and the behavioral orientation are the special features of the programme.
The Department has a library of its own. The department has organized a State Level one day seminar on the auspicious occasion of Commerce Teachers' Conference Meeting held on 19th April, 1996. The department offers several short term certificate courses in E-Commerce, Accounting Package, Insurance & Risk Coverage, Advertising & marketing and Entrepreneurship Development. The department has computer lab on its own and it has established on 30th January, 2009. Due to increasing the importance of computerized accounting, B.com Vocational course has been started from the academic year 2012-13.
Challenges Ahead :
In this era of LPG, liberalization, privatization and globalization and with the impending implications of GATT and WTO looming large, education in increasingly and inevitably being construed as commercial product and business enterprise, governed by market forces and the principles of market place. Time is not far off when the Foreign Universities will set up their campuses on Indian Soil and admit Indian Students to their institutions. The department of commerce should gear itself up to a face stiff competition in offering top quality education by diversifying restructuring the courses, meeting the expectations of all stakeholders, introducing choice - based cafeteria model credit system as advocated by the UGC. In this connection we look up for more skills oriented certificate courses, a computer lab and facilities for E-learning for B.Com., students.
Today, as the world eagerly waits at the threshold of the third millennium, our fifty years old department held high and resolute will moves on for service to society through "advancement in learning".
